Philosophy Seminar

Wednesday, October 21, 12:00 - 1:30. (Roughly 45 minutes talk, 45 minutes Q & A.)

John Matthewson

The conceptual space between health and disease (Co-authored with Simon Keller)

Abstract

Disease and health are not conceptually opposed, as theorists in the philosophy of medicine usually assume. Health does not require the absence of disease, disease does not always diminish health, and health and disease should not be defined in terms of each other. Rather, these concepts track different kinds of phenomena, and the connection between them is variable and contingent. This picture of the relationship between health and disease introduces new possibilities for addressing some entrenched disagreements in the philosophy of medicine, and for a reframing of the goals of public health and medical interventions.
